The newly re-furbished Royal North Shore Hospital includes the ReSCU containing 6 beds within the respiratory ward. These beds will be required for patients suffering from the following:

- Acute asthma and severe pneumonia and pulmonary embolism
- Sleep apnoea and Spinal Cord Injury
- Sleep Disordered Breathing and Daytime Hypercapnia
- Acute Respiratory Failure and Chronic Lung Disease
- Patients requiring ventilator weaning and non invasive ventilation

The HDU will provide the vital bridge for patients who require an interventional bronchoscopy service, non-invasive ventilation, and 2:1 nursing, complex respiratory care and other procedure services.

The ReSCU requires vital ventilation equipment, and specialist medical professionals in order for it to run effectively and to world class standards.
